When cattle graze exclusively on grass, their diet differs significantly from that of conventionally raised cattle, which are often fed grains and other processed feeds. Grass has higher levels of beneficial micronutrients than alternative feeds, so cattle that are strictly grass-fed have more well-rounded diets. The nutrients build up in the muscles over time, affecting the composition and nutrient profile of the beef itself.
Nutritional Benefits
The primary benefit of grass-fed beef is that it is lower in fat than other types of red meat. But, more than that, the fats it does contain are healthier ones. For example, it’s higher in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart health and can help to reduce inflammation throughout the body.
Additionally, grass-fed beef contains more antioxidants than other types of beef, as well as more vitamin A and vitamin E. This means that it can help to support a healthy immune system and protect against chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
Grass-fed beef is also higher in CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which is an important fatty acid that helps with weight management and muscle growth. It is important to note, however, that grass-fed beef does contain more calories than grain-fed beef, which may not be as suitable for some diets. If this is the case, consider substituting with chicken or fish.
Environmental Impact
Finally, grass-fed beef lessens environmental impact as it supports sustainable farming practices. Cattle raised on open pastures require less water and emit fewer greenhouse gases than those raised on factory farms, which means that opting for this type of meat can have a positive impact on the environment–as well as your health.
To ensure these qualities in our grass-fed cuts, we proudly partner with Grass Run Farms®, a collaboration of family farmers in the Midwest, raising cattle the way generations before them did. There’s nothing that comes out of their work that we’re not thrilled to send you and put on your family’s table.
